In a distressing incident at an African park, a male elephant violently attacked a female black rhino, inflicting severe injuries. Throughout the ordeal, the rhino’s calf stayed faithfully by her side, hoping for her recovery.

Amateur photographers Louis Kok and his wife Marthie, from Pretoria, South Africa, captured the shocking moment when the elephant aggressively flipped the rhino onto her back. The attack was driven by the elephant’s heightened aggression during musth—a condition marked by a dramatic rise in testosterone levels.

The couple had been photographing the rhino and her calf when the one-tusked elephant suddenly charged.

The male elephant, fueled by musth, relentlessly attacked the rhino, who was trying to protect her young calf.

Musth causes testosterone levels in bull elephants to surge up to 60 times higher than normal, often triggering extreme aggression.

“The elephant wasted no time overturning the rhino, leaving her vulnerable and unable to defend herself,” Mr. Kok explained. “It was a brutal display of strength as the elephant repeatedly rolled the helpless rhino in the dust, using its massive weight to inflict further injury.”

After the attack, the rhino’s calf stayed close, circling her mother and making several attempts to assist her.

Despite the calf’s efforts and the mother rhino’s determination to stand after two hours, her injuries were too severe. Tragically, she succumbed to her wounds a few days later, leaving behind a heartbroken calf.
