Olarro Conservancy Rescues Orphaned Elephant in Heartfelt Mission

Olarro Conservancy rangers recently reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation when they came to the aid of a seriously injured young elephant. Their swift and decisive actions played a vital role in the animal’s recovery.

While on a routine patrol, rangers encountered a 15-year-old bull elephant suffering from a severe wound on its right thigh. Surrounded by a herd of nearly 40 elephants, the situation demanded urgency and care. The rangers immediately notified conservancy management and called for specialized veterinary assistance.

Upon assessment, the wound was identified as a spear injury, estimated to be about a week old and showing clear signs of infection. To facilitate safe treatment, the team administered 10 milligrams of etorphine hydrochloride, a powerful tranquilizer. Delivered accurately from a vehicle, the sedative allowed the elephant to lie on its side for a thorough medical examination.

The wound, located on the downward-facing thigh, required immediate intervention. The team first created a ventral opening to enable proper drainage. This was followed by meticulous cleaning using water, hydrogen peroxide for debridement, and tincture of iodine to disinfect the area. Finally, the wound was packed with green clay to help absorb toxins and promote healing.

In addition to the wound care, the elephant was given injections of amoxicillin to combat infection and flunixin meglumine to reduce inflammation and manage pain.

To reverse the effects of the tranquilizer, the team administered 24 milligrams of diprenorphine hydrochloride. In just four minutes, the elephant regained consciousness and, to the relief of all present, safely rejoined its herd without any complications.
