Atlanta Braves star Freddie Freeman was visibly shaken during last night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies — and fans now know why.

Just hours before first pitch, news broke that Robert Redford, the Hollywood legend and star of The Natural, had passed away at age 89. For Freeman, a lifelong baseball romantic, the film wasn’t just a movie — it was part of his DNA.

From the very first inning, Freeman looked out of sync. He struck out twice early, uncharacteristically slamming his bat into the ground after the second strikeout — something Braves fans almost never see from their usually calm first baseman.

“He was my hero,” Freeman reportedly told teammates in the dugout. “The Natural made me want to play this game. Tonight just doesn’t feel real.”

Braves broadcasters even noted Freeman wiping his eyes between innings, and when cameras panned to him in the 7th, he appeared to take a deep breath and look toward the sky.

Despite his struggles, the crowd at Truist Park gave Freeman a standing ovation during his final at-bat. Phillies players were seen nodding in respect, acknowledging the weight Freeman was carrying.

Social media lit up with support:

“Freddie is all of us tonight. Play for Redford, Freddie,” one fan posted.

The Braves eventually dropped the game to the Phillies, but no one seemed to care about the score. This was bigger than baseball — it was about grief, memory, and the power of a story that inspired a generation of players.
