In the shadowy stillness of a fading day, a tense rescue mission unfolded deep in the wilds of Thailand. A majestic bull elephant, gravely injured by poison, stood at the center of a desperate fight for life—one that would test the resolve, coordination, and compassion of a dedicated team of wildlife experts.
Initial efforts were hampered by setbacks. The absence of Dr. Poghon and the late hour delayed critical treatment, but the team refused to lose hope. Acting quickly, they secured support from the SWT/KWS Sky Vet Unit, scheduling emergency assistance for the following day.
As dusk descended, the SWT Super Cub aircraft took to the skies for a late-night patrol, scouring the terrain in search of the wounded elephant. The team planned a second flight at dawn to ensure they wouldn’t lose track of their patient.
Simultaneously, arrangements were made to fly in Dr. Domnic Mijele, the renowned head of the SWT/KWS Mount Kenya Vet Unit, to perform the life-saving treatment. With low clouds and poor visibility at sunrise, the Super Cub finally spotted the elephant—accompanied by another bull—giving the team their first glimmer of hope.

With swift coordination, Dr. Mijele was airlifted from Nanyuki to the SWT’s Kaluku field headquarters. There, an experienced ground crew had already mobilized with supplies, ropes, medical gear, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle, ready for any outcome.
Flying by helicopter to the elephant’s location, Dr. Mijele arrived with calm precision. The team approached cautiously, positioning themselves at a safe distance from the restless bull. With practiced care, they delivered a tranquilizer dart, and the elephant slowly eased to the ground—safely sedated.
Using a vehicle, the team gently shifted the massive body into position, revealing the cause of the crisis: a painful, infected wound—inflicted by poison. Although the injury had not pierced the internal organs, the risk of infection was severe.

Working efficiently, Dr. Mijele cleaned the wound and administered long-acting antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Time was of the essence, but the operation proceeded flawlessly.
Minutes later, the elephant rose—steadily, gracefully—and walked into the dense bush with quiet dignity. Behind him, the rescue team stood in silence, hearts full, knowing they had given him another chance.
This extraordinary effort, made possible by Sky Vet’s financial support and the unwavering dedication of those on the ground and in the air, offers hope not only for this elephant but for all wildlife facing threats beyond their understanding.
In this race against time, teamwork and compassion won the day—and perhaps, an elephant’s future.
