Curious Leopard Leaps onto Safari Jeep in Tense Encounter, Lodge Issues Statement

A heart-stopping moment unfolded during a routine game drive when a curious young leopard unexpectedly jumped onto a safari vehicle, startling guests and staff. The incident occurred near Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge, within Kruger National Park, and was caught on camera, quickly going viral online.

The footage shows a male leopard cub leaping onto the bonnet of a stationary safari Jeep, sniffing around the vehicle as stunned onlookers remained motionless. A game ranger, seated at the front of the vehicle, maintained composure by avoiding eye contact with the animal—an experienced response that helped de-escalate the potentially dangerous situation.

The leopard eventually lost interest and dismounted without further incident. No injuries were reported, and all guests returned safely.

In response to growing public interest and concern, Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge released a formal statement clarifying the event:

“We wish to clarify an incident involving a young male leopard that has recently exhibited unusually inquisitive behavior around safari vehicles. Footage circulating online shows the leopard jumping onto the bonnet of a Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge vehicle during a sighting where two cubs and their mother were feeding on an impala. The situation escalated when the male cub approached the vehicle and unexpectedly leaped onto it. SANParks officials were promptly informed of the event.”

The lodge further emphasized its commitment to safety and ethical wildlife viewing:

“We want to firmly emphasize that Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge does not encourage or condone such close interactions in any way. Our strict safety protocols are in place to protect both guests and wildlife, ensuring that all encounters occur in a controlled and respectful manner. Guest safety, responsible wildlife viewing, and the preservation of natural animal behavior remain our top priorities.”

SANParks (South African National Parks) is currently monitoring the leopard’s behavior to determine whether further action or observation is needed.

While such close encounters are rare, wildlife experts remind visitors that unpredictable moments are always possible in natural settings, reinforcing the importance of professional guides and responsible tourism practices.
