In a move that’s already generating buzz across Hollywood and the football world alike, HBO has confirmed that Josh Hartnett will portray Dallas Cowboys legend Don Meredith in its upcoming biographical film, “Shades of Star & Steel.” A devoted Cowboys fan himself, Hartnett called the role “a dream — and a responsibility.”

Set against the backdrop of the early days of America’s Team, the film will chronicle Don Meredith’s rise from a Texas-born quarterback with charm and grit to the heart and humor of the Dallas Cowboys’ formative years. It will explore both his on-field brilliance and off-field charisma, which later made him a beloved figure in broadcasting history.

“Don was electric. He was toughness wrapped in wit,” Hartnett shared in HBO’s announcement. “He gave everything to the Cowboys and then kept giving as the voice of football to millions of fans. I grew up watching clips of him, and now I get to live in his boots.”

“Shades of Star & Steel” will be directed by Peter Berg, whose past work includes Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, ensuring a blend of raw football realism and character-driven storytelling. The screenplay, penned by Texas native and Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl, promises an emotionally grounded yet deeply nostalgic portrait of a man who helped define a franchise and an era.

The film will retrace Meredith’s journey from his standout college years at SMU, through his often underrated but pivotal tenure as the Cowboys’ first true star quarterback, and into his transformation as a beloved color commentator on Monday Night Football — where his wit and warmth made him a household name.

Producers say the film won’t shy away from the pressures Meredith faced — playing under the shadow of Coach Tom Landry’s stoic leadership, carrying a team that was still learning how to win, and navigating the brutal media glare that came with being “Captain Cowboy” long before the team became a dynasty.

“He wasn’t just a football player,” said executive producer Jeanette Richardson. “He was a symbol of Texas resilience — bold, funny, flawed, and unforgettable.”

The title, “Shades of Star & Steel,” reflects the duality Meredith embodied: the bright spotlight of Dallas stardom and the hard edge of perseverance beneath it all.

The project is currently in pre-production and is expected to air on HBO and Max in 2026, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of Meredith’s debut season with the Cowboys.

With Josh Hartnett at the helm and the full support of the Dallas Cowboys organization and the Meredith family, Shades of Star & Steel is poised to become a powerful tribute to a man who played with heart, lived with humor, and left a legacy that helped shape the legend of the Cowboys.
