With gentle trunks and unwavering care, the elephant herd lifted the panicked calf, proving family means never struggling alone.

This is the heartwarming moment a large herd of elephants stop to help a panicking calf get up a steep river bank.

The young pachyderm desperately tries to follow a huge adult over a ridge in the MalaMala Game reserve in South Africa.

The baby flounders and trips as it scrapes away at the ledge looming above the Sand River in the MalaMala Game reserve, South Africa

It decides to try a different route by doubling back and trudging up an even steeper slope nearer the herd.

But the youngster appeared to rebuff their help and tried to make it on its own by sprinting up a smaller ridge.

‘I remember looking at that high step onto the embankment and saw how small the little calf in the herd was and knew that he would struggle to get up there. That’s when I decided to start filming.’

The herd then carry on their way into the bush and away from the Sand River oasis, with the baby huddled close to its mother
