Helping hand: Footage shows a trained rescue elephant trying unsuccessfully to haul the giant animal from the ditch with a rope.
The mother had reportedly broken her left leg in the fall and was unconscious.
Other members of the herd waited for the pair to reappear but left when villagers started rushing to the scene.
Desperate eyewitnesses alerted forest rangers and also organised milk for the baby.
