In a move that is making waves both on and off the court, Boston Celtics captain Al Horford has signed a massive $22 million endorsement deal with sports drink giant Powerade. But it’s his next move that has left fans and community leaders in awe: Horford has announced he will donate $12 million of that deal to fund youth programs across Boston.
The news broke early Tuesday morning, with Powerade confirming the partnership in a press release touting Horford’s leadership, resilience, and strong community presence as key reasons for selecting him as the face of their new “Fuel the Future” campaign.
“Al Horford is more than an elite athlete — he’s a role model,” said Jenna Ruiz, Chief Marketing Officer at Powerade. “He embodies the power of hard work, determination, and heart — values that align perfectly with our brand.”
Shortly after the deal was announced, Horford held a press conference at Boston’s TD Garden where he stunned attendees with his announcement to allocate over half of his endorsement earnings to benefit underserved youth in Boston.
“This city has given me so much, on and off the court,” Horford said. “It’s only right that I give back in a way that builds lasting change. I want every kid in Boston to know they matter — and that their dreams are within reach.”
The $12 million donation will reportedly go toward expanding access to after-school sports, academic tutoring, arts education, and mental health resources in several Boston neighborhoods. According to sources close to Horford, he has been working closely with city officials and local nonprofits to ensure the funds are used effectively and equitably.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called Horford’s contribution “transformative.”
“This is the kind of leadership that makes Boston proud. Al’s generosity will ripple through our communities for years to come,” Wu said in a statement.
As the Celtics head into a crucial stretch of the playoffs, fans now have even more reason to rally behind their captain — not just for his performance on the hardwood, but for his heart off of it.
