The moment of key decisions is approaching at Real Madrid, and one of the club’s immediate concerns lies with the futures of Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez. Both players are out of contract on 30 June, and so far, no official word has been communicated from the club regarding potential renewals, as reported by Marca.

The two veterans are well aware of the club’s policy to offer only one-year extensions to players over a certain age. Ferland Mendy has renewed his contract until 2027, but even that agreement has not been formally announced by the club. Modric and Vazquez, meanwhile, have entered that zone where decisions are made on a season-by-season basis.

Each year, there is a set date by which the club must inform the player of its plans. That window typically falls at the end of April or early May, and with no movement so far, uncertainty grows. Lucas Vazquez hinted at his situation after the match against Arsenal on Movistar, offering a message of thanks to the fans that carried the tone of a possible farewell. Still, neither he nor Modric has received any indication from the board.

This season, however, includes the additional complication of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which allows for a one-month extension for players who will be involved in the tournament. If Modric and Vazquez leave in June, it is unlikely that their next club would allow them to join late after August holidays. That could incentivise Real Madrid to negotiate a temporary extension, should they wish to retain the pair for the tournament.

Both players would be happy to continue at the club. Modric, in particular, has publicly expressed his desire to remain a part of the team. However, the difficulty of extending his stay is real. Qatar has emerged as a possible next destination for the Croatian midfielder, who at 38 still harbours dreams of playing at the 2026 World Cup. Like Cristiano Ronaldo, Modric’s passion and physical condition suggest that retirement is not yet in sight.
