Because there are so many healthy dogs in need of a home, an injury or impairment can quickly become a death sentence for a puppy looking for a forever family. More dogs are killed when shelters are overcrowded, especially those that can be difficult to move.
Some rescue groups, such as the Sidewalk Specials, will intervene and take care of even the most difficult dogs. They save dogs from abusive circumstances and euthanasia lists and work with them until they find the right home for them.
Willow, one of their rescue dogs, would have been headed for euthanasia or life on the street if they hadn’t intervened.
The dog was taken to the vet after being the victim of a hit-and-run. Her owners initially wanted to save her, but after realizing that the veterinarian would have to amputate her limb, they decided that she was no longer wanted. Willow was left behind when her “family” left the veterinary practice without looking back.
Fortunately, things started to improve for the beautiful dog shortly after! She was adopted into an amazing family and now has a canine brother!
