A member of the public alerted St Mary's Seal Watch before volunteers from the wildlife organisation hurried to the scene where they wrapped the animal's face with a towel in an attempt to reduce stress and to prevent it biting

Eventually, they were able to gently manoeuvre the animal to safety before it was given a quick check-up to ensure that it had not sustained any serious injuries

A spokesperson for the wildlife group said: 'Normally when seals appear stuck, they will manage to get themselves out, but this poor thing was well and truly trapped'

‘It is likely that having been spooked and attempting to get across the rocks from where it was resting that the young pup misjudged the hole it was trying to cross and slid backwards.

It made its way from the hole and headed back toward the sea

‘When found, it was facing with just its head out the hole.

‘Even at this young age seals are very heavy and have extremely sharp teeth and give a nasty and dangerous bite.
